This week's work made me realize the different aspects of peer editing. I was able to learn what to look for on my classmate's drafts. I not only corrected grammatical errors, but went deeper to understand each one's proposal and make sure they have the content to be successful. Reviewing my classmate's drafts made me realize what I have to correct on my paper. I will also use my classmate's comments to fix my draft and hopefully produce a good final draft next week.

Deadline #5 HW #3 Peer Review Reflection

The two drafts i reviewed this week was Paulette's and Michael's. I what learned from the peer reviews is that everyone makes mistakes. I felt that my draft had to be perfect, but i did not notice it is a draft, not a final paper. With the draft, there is room for improvement. I also learned that the research proposal drafts need the organization and content to fulfill its requirements. For example, for the reviews I conducted, I found missing parts, such as the purpose of the topic and time line for the project. These are key parts needed in the paper. After reviewing my classmate's draft, I need to revise my grammatical errors and content of my draft, to make sure I have all requirements. The classmates that reviewed my draft were Michael and Brennan. The only comment that surprised me was Brennan's comment about writing in first person. I thought it was applicable for the proposal and not the actual research paper. After looking at my classmates' comments, I need to revise some grammar mistakes and add a little more content to suffice my audience.

Deadline #5 HW #2 Peer Review

I peer-reviewed:

Deadline #5 HW #5 Field Research

For my topic, there is numerous field research methods I can use to find more information. I can do an interview, as one of my methods. I would interview a game warden in Arizona. I would want to interview a game warden because they deal with the everyday problems and news of hunting. They can give me valuable information on number of hunters, hunting complaints, and hunting issues with neighboring towns or cities. I would plan a great deal of time on what to ask, to make sure I get the correct answers I need for my paper. Some of the questions I would ask:
What do you think of the current hunting controversy?
What kind of hunting complaints have you got this year?
What factors will affect the future of hunting?
Have you had any personal experiences with anti-hunters or groups?
What is your reaction to the anti-hunters message and arguments?
What do you think the hunting community needs to do to help change the views of the hunting-community?

I will make sure to ask questions that require more than a "yes" or "no" answer and be flexible with my questions during the interview.
I can also perform an observation for one of my field research methods. I plan on hunting here in the next few weeks to a month for turkey and deer. During my hunt, I can see if there is any issues with hunters and anti-hunters. I would be looking for other hunters, people who are not wearing camouflage (they could be anti-hunters), game wardens, landowners, and forest service rangers. My observations will give great visual evidence for my paper.
I can also use correspondence to find information. Many hunting websites have forums, where hunters communicate with each other online. I can ask questions over the forums to see what other hunter's opinions are about my research paper. Another method I can use is go to a public event to collect information. I could go to a rally for anti-hunting to learn more about the other side of my argument (opponent). These field research methods will give me a diverse of evidence, instead of just using electronic and print resources. This information will be credible because it is real life/personal, which will give me an edge for my paper.

Deadline #5 HW #4 Annotated Bibliography

Sunstein, Cass R. Animal Rights: Current Debates and New Direction. Oxford University Press, 2004. Ebrary. Mesa Community College, Mesa, AZ. 27 September 2007.

This source might be useful to my research because it talks about animal rights and how hunting affects it.It gives examples of what hunting does to animals in a negative way. For example, hunting limits populations of animals. It gives up to date information on animal rights and hunting. The source also stresses that animals have rights similar to humans. I can use this source as evidence for the other side of my argument. I can also use this information to rebuttal the non-hunting side of the argument.

Hills, Alison. Do Animals Have Rights. Totem Books, 2006. Ebrary. Mesa Community College, Mesa, AZ. 27 September 2007.

This source will be useful in my research because it discusses animal rights and how hunting violates these rights. It states that hunting causes suffering and pain. It states that hunting takes away morals from people because animals have equal rights to humans. I can use this information to rebuttal the animal-rights activists claims, by finding evidence that ethical shots on animals cause no suffering to animals, and it is a humane death.

Crispell, Dianne. “Targeting hunters”. American Demographics 16 (1994): 34. Academic Search Premier. Mesa Community College, Mesa, AZ. 27 September 2007.

I found this source on the Academic Search Premier of the Mesa Community College Library Database. This is a respectable source because it is on the college database. The source is about presenting and comparing statistics of hunters and anglers in America, social status of hunters and anglers, market forecast, and conservation awareness. In addition, the source confronts the Bambi stereotype, disproving any questions or concerns about hunting. For example, it explains that not all hunters kill. In Pennsylvania issued 1.1 million deer tags in 1992, and only 388,000 were harvested. This source is going to be useful for my research because it contains statistical evidence, which I can use to back up my arguments.

Deadline #5 HW #1 Reading Reflection

What I have learned from this week's readings are how to use library stacks, periodical rooms, and library reference rooms to find sources for my paper. In addition, I have also learned to use different field research methods to gather more information. Chapter 6 was useful in describing each way to get sources from print resources. I can now browse through stacks easier because all of the classification is subject based. I learned how to check out books and reserve them if they have been checked out on page 86. I can also consult resources in the reference room, to see if they acceptable for my research paper. For example, I can consult periodical indexes which lists sources in magazines and trade journals. This information will be valuable in finding sources for this week's annotated bibliography. Chapter 7 was about finding information through field research methods. The chapter went through the different methods, such as surveys, correspondence, public events, observations, and interviews. What I really liked from the chapter was the guidelines how to properly do each method. For example, on page 95-97, the book gave advice on deciding whom to interview and what questions to ask. I learned while conducting your interview, you want to be flexible and have many follow-up questions. This chapter will help me receive more information on my topic, and as wells as complete homework 5 of this week. One of the websites for this week was about the editing process and links to help with grammar problems. The other one was about work shopping, giving guidelines and advice on peer reviews for this week. This week's readings are going to help me complete my assignments and it brought back memories and assignments I did in high school, which used these kind of techniques (interviews, print resources, etc.).

Deadline #4 HW #7 Deadline Reflection

What I have learned this week's work was that evaluating sources is critical in having a dependable information for your argument in your paper. Without sufficient sources, my paper would probably not be credible. I also learned how to fix some of my grammar difficulties using the examples on the Purdue Owl site. The only thing I had trouble on was beginning my proposal. It seems like every time I have to write something, It takes me a good 30 minutes before I get the ball rolling. My only concern for the class is the number of assignments a week. For me sometimes it gets a little stressful since I have a full schedule, but I hope I will continue to work hard and get it done.

Deadline #4 HW #5 Annotated Bibliography

PETA Media Center. "Why Sport Hunting Is Cruel and Unnecessary". 2003. PETA. 20 September 2007.

I found this source on Google search engine. This is a respectable source because it is from PETA, which is a well known organization in the United States. The article is about giving explanation on why hunting is wrong. It goes in detail about the pain and cruelty animals suffer from hunting, hunting is profit-driven and blood-thirsty, and canned cruelty. It also talks about what people can do against hunting, such as joining organizations and harassing hunters. This is going to be a good source for my paper because it discusses my opponent's argument, which I can rebuttal.

Hanley, Robert. “New Jersey Panel Approves First Bear Hunt in 33 Years”. New York Times. (2003): 5-. America’s Newspapers. Mesa Community College. 20 Sept 2007.
<http://infoweb.newsbank.com.ezp.mc.maricopa.edu/iw-search/we/InfoWeb?p_action=doc&p_docid=1018CD8F58C2892F&p_docnum=6&p_queryname=3&p_product=NewsBank&p_theme=aggregated4&p_nbid=H6AU5EEUMTE5MDM1MjMyMC40MzQ4MjoxOjc6cmEtMjE3Mw>.

I found this source on the America's Newspaper database on the Mesa Community College Library webpage. This is a respectable source because it is on the Mesa Community College Library webpage. The article is about News Jersey approving first bear season in 33 years. The growing population and deadly encounters with humans, hunting is needed as an alternative management control on the bears. This is a good source for my paper because it shows that without hunting, wildlife can become problems for humans. This will be great information on rebutalling arguments from the anti-hunters to prove them wrong that hunting is not needed.

Stumpf, Elizabeth. “The Hunting Debate: Aiming at the Issues”. School Library Journal. 46 (2000): 166-. Academic Search Premier. Mesa Community College. 20 Sept 2007.

I found this source on Academic Search Premier database. This is a respectable source because it is on the Mesa Community College Library webpage. The article is about the ethical and moral issues around hunting. The author discusses economic contribution, gun control, and animal population control. This will be a good source for my paper because it describes what kind of impact has on our society (positive and negative). I can use this information to show the good side of hunting.

Patterson, Gregg. “NAACP, Marbury malign hunting”. ESPN Outdoors. (August 2007). Google. 20 Sept. 2007.

I found this article on Google search engine. This is a respectable source because it was on ESPN Outdoors, which gives reliable information and news on hunting and fishing. The article was about Atlanta chapter president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, R.L. White, likened dogfighting to hunting. White stated that "all the fuss was over dogfighting when hunting deer and other animals is acceptable." This wil be a good source for my paper because I can explain that hunting is not similar to dogfighting because hunting is legal and dogfighting is illegal. It just shows someone else trying to put down hunting.

Deadline #4 HW #6 Evaluate Source

Zumbo, Jim. “Battling the Antis.” Outdoor Life 209 (August 2002): 5(24). Academic Search Premier. Mesa Community College. 13 Sept. 2007
<http://web.ebscohost.com.ezp.mc.maricopa.edu/ehost/detail?vid=5&hid=13&sid=69aaa63c-04df-4327-9fb2-5057bca250b3%40SRCSM2>.

This source is relevant because it discusses about what hunters can do against animal-rights activists to preserve hunting. My paper is about the effectiveness of hunter's strategies on the non-hunting community and this source provides what hunters are doing to change their views. There is not very much evidence in this source. The source gives examples of what hunters need to do to save hunting, such as joining organizations. There is not evidence whether or not it is working. The author is knowledgeable. Jim Zumbo is a well-known outdoor writer for over 30 years and wrote over 29 books. He is also worked for a major hunting magazine, known as the Outdoor Life. The publisher of the source is Bonnier Corporation. Bonnier Corporation owns Outdoor Life and Field & Stream, which are major hunting magazines. Bonnier Corporation is pro-hunting and this will help me in my argument that hunting needs to be preserved. The source was published five years ago. The age of the source is not a concern to me because the guidelines it offers hunters to accomplish are similar to the ones of today. The source wants hunters to join organizations to defend hunting, and it is still the same today. Through evaluating the source, I decided this is a legitimate source I can use for my paper.

Deadline #4 HW #2 Grammar Assignment

The past grammar difficulties I have are usage of commas, sentence fragmentation, and sentence clarity. I used the Purdue Owl site to help me figure out my troubles. I looked at the comma webpage and found information on rules of commas. It gave me a basic concept of commas. I learned that commas turn sentences into manageable segments. I read through quick guide of commas and learned many different scenarios to use commas. I usually have problems putting commas on certain words in a sentence, and the guide told me that i need to put commas around the middle of a sentence to set off words that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence. I looked at the sentence fragmentation and was able to get a better understanding through the visual examples. The webpage had fragment sentences in red and underneath the sentence was corrected in blue. There was examples of sentence fragments with no main verb or subject which I was able to look at. The sentence clarity webpage had multiple examples of sentence clarity problems. I read through each example from old information to new information, active voice, parallel construction, and multiple negatives.

Paragraph Revision (Journalism Discussion Question):
The evolution of self-regulation in movies from 1922 to 1956 started with the movie scandals of the 1920’s. Movie industry had two issues to face during the 1920’s, scandals with movie stars and movie content becoming too provocative. The movie star scandals started when comedian Roscoe Arbuckle had a party in San Francisco in 1921. During the party, model, Virginia Rappe was rushed to the hospital with stomach pains and eventually died there. Arbuckle was charged with murder. Tests revealed that Virginia had died due to a ruptured bladder. After three trials, Arbuckle was not found guilty.
After the trials, director William Desmond Taylor was found murdered at his home. One of Arbuckle’s friends, Mabel Normand was known as the last person to see William alive. After Mabel was cleared, people found out that “Taylor” was not his real name and was a part of a drug business. During this shocking news, the Catholic Legion of Decency boycotted all movies and Los Angeles (movies. Los Angeles) businessmen decided that Hollywood needed to be policed.

I learned how to fix some of my grammar difficulties through examples on the Purdue Owl site. I will continue to learn through my mistakes and hopefully produce an error free Research Project at the end of the semester.

Deadline #4 HW #3 Draft WP#1

Hunting Debate

The hunting debate in America is a controversial issue that will determine the future of hunting. Hunting is a “hate it or love it” subject. There are strong opinions about hunting in America. The two major groups are sportsmen and animal-rights activists. Sportsmen claim hunting is a beloved American tradition, an effective wildlife management tool, conservation tool, and economic impact. Animal-rights activists believe hunting violates animal rights and sportsmen kill animals inhumanely. The goal of both sides is to change the views of the non-hunting community of the American public.

Research Question: Although we know that the hunting controversy is a heated debate. How effective is the hunting community's strategies in swaying the non-hunting majority of the American public.

This topic is controversial because it affects the personal views towards wildlife (animals). Majority of the public have a like for animals because they bring enjoyment to our hearts. Hunting alters these views and causes a bitter debate. The killing of animals creates hatred towards hunting for portion of the public because they believe animals have rights, similar to human rights and deserve to live. While another portion of the public believes animals have many uses, such as a natural resource (food, hunting, management, etc.).
I have numerous personal experiences that support hunting in the debate. On one of my hunting trips in Arizona, my father and I confronted a few animal-rights activists. We were hunting near Bartlett Lake for javelina, when activists appeared with pots and pans. They began shouting and banging the pots and pans trying to scare the wildlife away, so we could not hunt them. In addition, they were trying to make us leave the area. This was frustrating because my father and I spent countless days trying to find javelina, only to be run off the mountain. My father and I were there to help manage the javelina population around that area and to enjoy some father-and-son bonding. It was the irrational, misunderstood actions of activists that ruined our hunt. Another experience was this past fall, where I volunteered for the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. I was working on hunter check stations, where we checked deer and elk harvested by hunters for valuable information on harvest statistics. The harvest statistics were used determine populations of elk and deer in Western Montana and estimate the number of tags to issue next year. During the 62 hours of volunteer work, we were harassed by anti-hunters that droved by. The biologists and I were doing our work for the betterment of elk and deer in Western Montana, only to get harassed by anti-hunters. My personal experiences show the misunderstanding animal-rights activists and anti-hunters have on hunting. I hope my personal experiences are influential on swaying the non-hunting majority.
The purpose of my research paper is to educate and promote hunting in the United States. Ultimately, I want to change the views of the non-hunting majority in favor of hunting. Hunting was been perceived as something bad and it effects not only us, but wildlife. In some areas, wildlife populations are over populated and destroying the ecosystem. Hunting is need as a management tool limit wildlife populations to create healthy ecosystems for many years Hunting needs a place in American society because it is a tradition for numerous families. Anti-hunting groups are doing a good job in stopping hunting rights, such as closing down bear season in California in 1989. It is the hunting community which I am a part of that needs stop these attacks and persuade the non-hunting community that hunting needs to be preserved in America.
My opinion on hunting is that I believe it deserves to stay in America. I have been hunting over nine years and it is my favorite hobby. It frustrates me to see all the negativity that hunting attracts. Hunting has many benefits which I have personally viewed. It is a family tradition of ours and a great father-and-son bonding time. Hunting is a great wildlife management tool. For example, Colorado has an over abundant of elk and they more tags per year to help compensate. The less number of elk benefit other wildlife and improves the ecosystem as a whole. In addition, hunting brings a large amount of revenue to many states. This money is used for conservational use to ensure land and wildlife for many years. Hopefully, hunting will have more positives than negatives.
My audience is the non-hunting community in America. I hope my research and argument provides enough information to make a change in their views. I will present both sides of the argument and show why hunting needs to stay and those animal-rights activists are wrong.
My research plan consists of using electronic sources to find my sources. I will get my information off of the Mesa Community College library database and catalog to retrieve government documents. I will use web search engines such as Google. I will also use web directories, news search sites, and government documents search sites and directories. I am also going to use some print resources, such as magazines and newspapers. I am going to use sources from SCI (Safari Club International) and U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) which give pros and cons argument on hunting. My research will provide essential evidence for my audience to convince them that hunting needs to be preserved.
In conclusion, my timeline for the research project is 12 weeks. During the 12 week period, I will continue to do research to get information and hopefully become an expert on my issue. I need to choose at least 8 valuable sources to represent my annotated bibliography. I plan on working on all of the assignments to better understand the research project. After the project is completed, I will construct a portfolio to show what I have learned and evaluate the entire research project process.

Deadline #4 HW #1 Reading Reflection

This week's readings helped me know how to find sources with online library catalogs, evaluating sources, how to read my sources. Chapter 5 Section A is about searching sources with online library catalogs. Online catalogs help locate books, journals, documents, video, and much more. It taught me what I search by, such as author, title, word, or publisher. I can also find sources by call number from the Library of Congress Classification System and Dewey Decimal Classification System. I really liked Chapter 9 because it showed me how to evaluate sources through a series of questions. I should look for revelance, evidence, author, publisher, timeliness, and comprehensiveness. Through these factors, I can easly determine if the source is legitimate for my research question. Chapter 8 was about reading my sources critically. Reading critically is different than evaluating because it is about questioning everything about the source. I learned how to develop a preliminary thesis statement on page 111. You have to brainstorm a response to your research question and refine it to a thesis statement. In addition, while reading, you should use important strategies to understand the source, such as identify key ideas. The websites were useful because it gave helpful information on editing and improving papers and workshops for peer reviews. It also gave links for helpful hints, such as to increase the detail and context of simple sentences. The readings are going to help with this week's work by helping me complete homework six and my continued research on my topic.

Coralee-D3HW3 http://harding302.blogspot.com/
Courtney-D3HW3 http://courtsblog22.blogspot.com/
Jeff- D3HW2 http://jefffitz.blogspot.com/
Alexander- D3HW http://teufelheunden.blogspot.com/

This week's work helped me understand how to create and refine research questions, different resources to find information, and get more sources for my bibliography. What was most beneficial was the Rhetorical Situation which showed me the guidelines of what my paper is going to be about and who I am writing to (audience analysis). The readings from the book and this week's work is going to help me in writing other papers in the future. Reading and replying to my classmates' blogs made me realize that everyone is in the same boat as me. I always thought that I was the only one with some frustrations and difficulties, but other students did too, which made me feel better. I also like what other student's topics were and excited to read their papers.

Deadline #3 HW# 7 Annotated Bibliography

Johnson, Don L. "The battle for hunting rights." Outdoor Life 179 (March 1987): 78(4). Academic One File. Gale. Mesa Community College. 13 Sept. 2007
<
http://find.galegroup.com/itx/infomark.do?&contentSet=IAC-Documents&type=retrieve&tabID=T003&prodId=AONE&docId=A4677665&source=gale&srcprod=AONE&userGroupName=mcc_mesa&version=1.0>.

I found this source on the Academic One File from the Electronic Resource on MCC Library Database. This article is about the fight in the courts and on the streets to save hunting rights in America against animal-rights activists. It gives reasons for why hunting is in danger from anti-groups and what sportmens can do help preserve hunting. This is a respectable source because I found it on the library database. This source will be useful for my research question because it describes the importance of saving hunting in America which is ultimately my purpose of my paper.

Clark, George E. "Hunting in Context." Environment 49 (June 2007): 5(3,4,2p). Academic Search Premier. Mesa Community College. 13 Sept. 2007
<http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail?vid=17&hid=7&sid=4acbd59c-46b1-4588-81f3-ef0a1ded22ea%40SRCSM2>.

I found this source on the Academic Search Premier in the Mesa Community College Library Database. The article is about giving a descriptoin of anti-hunting and hunting and how it effects America on many different levels (economy, environmental, social). In addition, it also talks about some common ground between the two groups. Both groups agree about poaching and how it should be eliminated. A valuable statistic I found in the article was that hunters spend billions of dollars annually which benefits federal agencies and conservation of wildlife and land. This is a respectable article because it was on the Mesa Community College Library Database. This source is going to be useful for my research question because it talks about both sides of the about the issue of hunting which will help me write about the argument (address both sides).

Zumbo, Jim. “Battling the Antis.” Outdoor Life 209 (August 2002): 5(24). Academic Search Premier. Mesa Community College. 13 Sept. 2007
<http://web.ebscohost.com.ezp.mc.maricopa.edu/ehost/detail?vid=5&hid=13&sid=69aaa63c-04df-4327-9fb2-5057bca250b3%40SRCSM2>.

I found this source on Academic Search Premier on the Mesa Community College Library database. The article is about Jim Zumbo, the author of the article, discussing what hunters in the United States can do to promote hunting and how to deal with animal-activists. The article tells sportmens to vote on election day to preserve hunting, speak out to the mass media to let the public know about the importance of hunting, and joining organizations, such as National Rifle Association, which are pro-hunting activists. The source is respectable because it was found on the Mesa Community College Library database and the author, Jim Zumbo is a world-renowned outdoor writer and respected through the hunting community. This is beneficial to my research because it shows how to deal with anti-groups and what sportmens can do to win the fight and opinions of others. My topic is about the effects and strategies of sportmens trying to change the non-hunting community views and this article answers my topic.

"Anti's ramping up." Hunting 33.3 (May-June 2005): 16(1). General OneFile. Gale. Mesa Community College. 17 Sept. 2007

I found this source on General OneFile on the Electronic Resource link on the Mesa Community College Library website. The article is about how the largest anti-hunting group creating a legal department to fight sportmens in court. The legal department is known as Animal Protection Litigation. It was created after the Humane Society of the United States and Funds for Animals merged together. The department has added four attorneys and have over $98 million for annual support in legal battles against sportmens. This source is useful because it shows the other side of my argument. It shows what the anti-hunting community is doing to fight against the hunting community. This source is respectable because it is on the Mesa Community College Library database.

Deadline #3 HW #6 Analyzing the Rhetorical Situation

Topic: My topic is the hunting controversy in America and how effective is the hunting community's strategies on swaying the non-hunting majority. This applies non-hunting citizens in America on whether hunting will continue in the future.
Context: My context of my paper will consists arguments on both sides of the hunting issue, anti-hunting and pro-hunting. I will have statistics and government information on the topic from government documents, such as a source where I found President George Bush telling federal agencies to promote hunting as a wildlife management tool. There will be information from experts from magazines such as Outdoor Life discussing the importance of hunting and it effects on our society, in a positive way. I will talk about how hunting is an American tradition and a conservational tool to promote wildlife populations and healthy ecosystems. In addition, I will talk about the impact of hunting on the economy on how much money is spent from hunters to help federal and state agencies, as well as local cities. There will be sources from articles in discussing the efforts of both sides in either preserving or ending hunting. For majority of the paper, I will try to persuade my audience, that hunting needs to be preserved in the United States because it does more good than harm.
Purpose: The purpose of my research paper is to educate and promote hunting in the United States. Ultimately, I want to change the views of the non-hunting majority in favor of hunting. Hunting was been percieved as something bad and it effects not only us, but wildlife. In some areas, wildlife populations are over populated and destroying the ecosystem. Hunting needs a place in American society because it is a pastime and tradition for numerous families. Anti-hunting groups are doing a good job in stopping hunting rights, such as closing down bear season in California in 1989. It is the hunting community which I am a part of to stop these attacks and persuade the non-hunting community that hunting is a positive sport, management tool, and pasttime. I have personal experience with this topic and greatly passionate in writing about it.
Audience: My audience is the non-hunting majority in the American public.
Author: The author is me and whoever has written a research paper as mine which deals with the hunting controversy.

WP #1 Research Proposal is more about discussing about the topic I am going to write about, while WP #3 is about the rhetorical situation of the contents of my paper in detail, such as the topic, context, purpose, audience, and author.

Deadline #3 HW# 5 Audience Analysis

The group I think I will be focusing on for my paper is the non-hunting majority in America. These are people who are neutral on the issue of hunting. The background of my audience is that they live anywhere in the United States, from big cities to rural areas. They were never interested or influence by hunting at either a young age or now. They have never have thought about hunting or cared about it. My audience educational skills range from everyday workers to surgeons. Educational skills does not have a real influence on my topic. The position and attitude of my audience on hunting is neutral. They are not biased on the issue. Their attitude is they don't care about it. The purpose for them reading my paper is to sway their position in favor of hunting in America and to show them the positive side of hunting. The goal is to help preserve hunting in America for the future. What I want them to know after reading my paper is that hunting is not a cruel sport, but more as a conservation tool to manage our wildlife and to continue its long tradition in America. What I want the audience to do after reading my paper is to be in favor of hunting and join organizations that fight to preserve hunting, such as SCI (Safari Club International) and petition bills that abolish hunting. My audience already knows the basics of the hunting controversy, such as hunting is in-humane and hunting is an American tradition. They want to know more in-depth information as why hunting is a positive in this country and what are the benefits for everyone. They need to know that hunting is not what it is to be perceived as. They need to know that hunting does good for society economically and socially. In addition, they need to know the negative affects on ecosystems where hunting is prohibited.

Deadline #3 HW# 4 Invested in Topic/Research Question

My audience for my research question is the American Public. Everyone has an opinion about hunting and it affects my topic. People that are invested in my topic is the non-hunting majority of America. I will be trying to sway their views to agree with hunting. I will also have readers, such as the anti-hunting majority and hunting majority. My paper hopefully clears the bad air between the two groups and provide a bright future for the hunting sport. I believe everyone wants to know the answer because hunting is an American tradition and majority of the public are informed of hunting in the states. The non-hunting majority and anti-hunting majority are most affected of my paper because it will either change their views and still feel the same way of hunting. With my information, the different groups will be able to see statistics and effects of hunting in America as a positive impact. It is going to be a difficult task to change other's views because hunting is a "hate it or love it" type of topic.

Deadline #3 HW #3 Search Plan

1. Sources:
Government Documents regarding bills and/or petitions on hunting related issues. Hunting websites such as SCI (Safari Club International) and U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance which have articles and updated news on hunting related topics and hunting rights. CQ Researcher which have a great article on hunting controversy. Hunting Magazines such as Field and Stream which have news and statistics on hunting and anti-hunting. PETA website which has information on anti-hunting. I will also check hunting forums on websites which have personal views on the topic.
2. Resources: Majority of my resources will be electronic. I will get my information off of the Mesa Community College library database and catalog to retrieve government documents. I will use web search engines such as Google. I will also use web directories, news search sites, and government documents search sites and directories. I am going to use some print resources, such as magazines and newspapers.
3. Search Strategies:
Keyword and Phrase Searches
I will use simple searches, such as "hunting", "anti-hunting", "hunting rights", "animal-activists", "in-humane", and "tradition". Searches for exact phrases, such as "hunting controversy", "animal rights activists fight against hunting", and "hunting debate".

Deadline # 3 HW #2 Research Question

After re-reading Chapter 3 from the Bedford Researcher and doing some of the activities, I have narrowed down my research question. I'm thinking my role for my research paper is an advocate. Advocates present evidence in favor to their side of an argument. This essentially fits me because I am writing about the hunting controversy in America today and trying to persaude people that hunting is not bad. I can also see myself as a reporter presenting neutral information on the topic. I would not have an opinion on the side. It could be either one, but i'm not totally sure yet. What helped me figure out my research question was pages 34-41. It helped me through choosing what my question is going to be formatted (Outocomes, Information, and Evaluation) and refining it by taking broad words out and replacing them with specific words. I narrowed down my research question to either of these two because they are both interesting and I would be passionate in writing either one.

Research Question: Although we know that the hunting controversy has been a heated debate. How effective are the hunting community's strategies in swaying the vast non-hunting majority of the American public.

OR

In the light of the hunting controversy in America. Could the assault by animal-rights groups and environmentalists abolish hunting in America.

Deadline #3 HW #1 Reading Reflection

This week's readings were useful because it gave me a process on developing my research question, organizing my data, and information on searching for sources on the Internet. Chapter 3 from the Bedford Researcher was of much help because it guided me on considering my role in my research and refining my research question. On page 33, I learned what my role is on the paper. There were many descriptions of each different role from advocates to entertainers. I also liked the tutorial on page 41, which showed me the basic steps of taking a broad research question and narrowing it down to something that is more specific. Chapter 4 was about collecting and keeping track of information from my research. It showed how to save information by printing articles from web pages and saving it on a flash drive. You can also save information through email. It also stressed about keeping information organized for your convienence. I really like how it talked about the search plan because it is going to help out when I have to complete deadline 3. Chapter 5 section b was about the different searching information on electronic resources. It gave definitions on web search engines to government search sites and directories. What was really helpful was page 77 which gave ways to search for sources by typing words or phrases in the search fields. You can type in one or more keywords like simple searches or special characters like wildcard searches. This week's readings are going to be useful because it is going to help me do my search plan and help me fix my research question. Overall, it is going to be great help for this week's work and are other coming papers.

This weeks work helped me understand how to find a topic, research it, and do an annotated bibliography. The readings from the book gave me guidelines which enabled me to do the work with ease. The Bedford Researcher helped me narrow my topic by brainstorming and talking to other. Researching on the interenet gave me good, solid informaion that I can base off of my paper. This week worked helped me get closer into writing my research proposal. Replying to my classmate's blog gave good morale, wishing everyone good luck and good job, but nothing more than that.

Deadline #2 HW #6 Annotated Bibliography

U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance. Sportsmen Applaud President's Order to Promote Hunting. 17 Aug. 2007. U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance. 6 Sept. 2007.

I found this article on Google Directory. It is a respectable source because the U.S. Sportmen's Alliance is a government funded foundation. The article is about President George W. Bush releasing the order, entitled “Facilitation of Hunting and Wildlife Conservation.” It directs all federal agencies to facilitate the expansion and enhancement of hunting opportunities, wildlife management and habitat. The order wants to increase hunting opportunities and make sure each state has healthy game populations. This source will be useful for my research because it discussed ways to keep hunting strong in our country so we and the wildlife can benefit.

Crary, David. Fewer U.S. hunters worries wildlife agencies. 5 Sep. 2007. Associated Press. 6 Sept. 2007.

I found this article on ESPN Outdoors, the hunting section. I intially looked it up on Google. This is a respected source because the author of the article works for the Associated Press. The article is about the shrinking numbers of new hunters in the United States. Wildlife Agencies are worried about this because hunters spend a lot of money on licenses which support these agencies. The primary cause of less hunters are urbanization, can't afford time or money, and some actions of animal activists. This source is useful to my topic because it talks about the loss of hunters and how animal activists and organizations like this new trend. It brings up the concerning question of how do I save hunting in this country?

Deadline #2 HW #5 Reflect Narrow Topic

What sparked my interest in this topic is my passion for the outdoors and hunting. I have been hunting for the past 10 years and is one of the most enjoyable activities I do. When I heard about the hunting controversy, I was eager to see it because it is a heated debate for the past years. Anything that threatens my hunting opportunities is a big deal to me. I have had personal experience with this topic. I am a hunter and had dealt with such issues out in the field. For example, activists banging pots and pans to scare game away from hunters to activists stealing and destroying game cameras. I have worked with the Colorado Division of Wildlife and Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks and have encountered situations that gave reason for anti-hunters to protest. Such as when a hunter illegally shot a deer "poached" out of season. I also helped catch a man who shot the wrong species of deer and was heavly fined in Montana last year. Through exploring the topic, my interests are confirmed that both sides have good information and explainations. Activists and environmentalists believe hunters kill animals inhumanely and were able to cancel the bear season in California in 1989. Hunters believe hunting is an American tradition and an effective management tool. Hunters also have the support of numerous hunting magazines and the NRA (National Rifle Association). What suprized me the most about the topic is how many non-hunters are in the United States. It is the goal of hunters and activists to try to persuade the non-hunters group to one side. I value these issues of the topic because I feel like one of the things I love is getting slowly pulled away from me. I feel like all hunters are put on the spot, where in reality, it is only a handful that cause a bad reputation for the whole hunting community. I think its my duty and others to explain are side of the story and hopefully change some opinions, so hunting privileges can last longer. Hunting is not only my favorite pasttime, but is something I would like to make a career of, such as a wildlife biologist, game warden, or outdoor wrtiter. It is not only activists and environmentalists threatening our hunting opportunities, but the growing population and shrinking wildlife habitat. My experiences of this topic include everything from all my hunting trips, such as the dove hunting I did this past weekend to an archery hunt for pronghorn antelope in Montana back in August. I have worked with state agencies and was able to experience and listen to both sides of the story.

Deadline #2 HW#4 Narrowing Topic

I am going to narrow my topic down to hunting controversy, anti- vs. pro-. I decided to go with this topic because it is something that I am fully aware of and a part of. I have been hunting for almost ten years now and understand the different sides of the subject. I narrowed it down through brainstorming and talking to others. I listed many ideas that occured to me and majority were hunting related, which made me realize that my topic should be hunting-orientated. I talked to some of my friends and dad about my topics. They all agreed I should do the hunting topic because of my passion of hunting and the outdoors and my knowledge and experience of hunting. My research question is going to do something about views of anti- and pro- hunting and most recent news on the topic.

Deadline # 2 HW# 3 Annotated Bibliography

Worsnop, R. L. “Hunting controversy.” CQ Researcher 2 (1992): 49-72. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community College, Mesa, AZ. 6 Sept. 2007. <http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre1992012400>.

I found this site on MCC's CQ Researcher. This is a respectable source because found it on the college article database. The article is about the heated debate of anti- and pro- hunting. Environmentalists and animal-rights groups blame sportsmen for killing animals inhumanely. Hunters say it is an American tradition and effective management tool. There is a lot of useful information and a good argument. This is an interesting topic because I love hunting and it would be something I would like to look deeper into and understand both sides more.

Arrandale, T. “National parks under pressure.” CQ Researcher 16 (2006): 817-840. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community College, Mesa, AZ. 6 Sept. 2007 <http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre2006100600 >.

I found the article on MCC's CQ Researcher. It is a respectable source because it is on the college article database. The article is about the upcoming concern of budget constraints on National Parks System. People are worried the parks will be too dangerous to visitors and less educational and satisfying. The national parks are trying to increase entrance fees and donations to compensate the budget fall. Also there is a question stirring up about recreational users utilizing the parks more, while traditionalists are trying to preserve it. This is an interesting topic because many visitors flock to national parks during the year and the budget loss could affect the management of the park and the surrounding's cities' economies. I went to Yellowstone National Park before and could see that such a problem would be devastating to the area. I could narrow this topic further by discussing the importance of national parks to the country so the budget could be fix, or discuss about the traditionalists versus recreationists on national parks.

Hosansky, D. “Invasive species.” CQ Researcher 11 (2001): 785-816. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community College, Mesa, AZ. 6 Sept. 2007. <http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre2001100500 >.

I found this arictle on the MCC's CQ Researcher. It is a reliable source because it is in the college article database. The article is about how non-native species established themselves in the United States. They cause enviromental and economic problems and costs the United States $138 billion per year. This would be an interesting topic because it is a problem not that many people are aware of or really care about. I went to school last year at the University of Montana, and there was a problem with an invasive weed there, destroying forest habitat. I could narrow this topic down to how these species cause problems to solutions of getting rid of them.

Deadline #2 HW#2

I commented on Jeanine's Help blog.

Deadline #2 HW#1 Reading Reflection

Everything's an Argument-Chapters 1 and 20 were insightful for this upcoming assignment. Chapter 1 talked about the different types of arguments and how to choose and connect with your audience. I liked how it went through detail of each different type of argument and had an example to go with it. For my research proposal, I was looking at arguments to convince, explore, and inform. It gives a great background information to start with. I really liked how it talked about what kind of context you should use to be appropiate for your audience. I learned a lot about appealing the audience. On page 38, the chapter talked about pathos, ethos, and logos. These are different appeals from emotional, credibility, and reason to the audience. Chapter 20 is about MLA style and documenting sources. It shows examples of citations from unknown authors to a speech. This is going to be very useful when I have to do bibliographies this next deadline. I also finally learned what MLA stood for, Modern Language Association.
The Bedford Researcher- The readings for this deadline were easy to comprehend and informational. It made me feel comfortable about starting my reasearch proposal because I was nervous and had no clue what to write about. Chapter 1 helped ease my nerves by showing me in steps how to look for topics and different research tools. It told me how to go to the library to fin books, articles, and web directories. It also showed me how to choose my topic through choosing my audience and analyzing the assignment. I also liked using brainstorming and clustering my ideas to get me closer to figuring out my topic. It gave good advice on how I should take notes of my resaerch such as summarizing pages and keeping a folder of all my research materials and information. The MLA chapter is very similar to Everything's an Argument, so I did not really stress over it. It also let me know I could find other resources through blogs on the internet. I did not mess with the websites and will use them for reference another time. Overall, these chapters are the basis of me doing well on this research proposal and the other assigments in the future.
